Guide to Jaeger LeCoultre Watches

Jaeger LeCoultre produces roughly 100,000 timepieces on an annual basis. This is about twice as many as Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet, but significantly less compared to Rolex or Omega. Jaeger LeCoultre is a much-respected watchmaker that produces all of its movements in-house. Signature collections include the Reverso, Master and Polaris model lines.

Jaeger LeCoultre, along with A. Lange & Sohne, Vacheron Constantin, Panerai, IWC and others, is owned by the Swiss luxury conglomerate Richemont. Richemont, LVMH and the Swatch Group are the largest luxury groups owning most of the world’s premier watch brands except for Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

The Reverso, arguably Jaeger LeCoultre’s most iconic model, was originally designed for British Army officers in India to withstand the rigors of playing polo. By reversing the watch face, the riders could be assured that the face would not be damaged during the game. The Reverso was launched in the 1930’s and remains a cornerstone of the brand today.

Jaeger LeCoultre, also known as ‘The Watchmaker’s Watchmaker’, has made movements for many other brands over the years and is well known in the industry for its high level of craftsmanship. Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin have all used Jaeger LeCoultre movements in some of their most famous timepieces (including the Royal Oak). Jaeger LeCoultre is known for its vast number of calibers (more than 1,200) and its long history of innovation, with over four hundred patents to its name.

Jaeger LeCoultre’s “1000 Hour Test” is the brand’s internal methodology by which its watches undergo a rigorous 6-week testing protocol to meet strict performance and quality requirements, such as accuracy, waterproofness, resistance to temperature changes, pressure changes, magnetic fields, etc. The engraved seal on the back of the timepiece assures the wearer that the watch has passed these tests. The test is all part of the brand’s mission to go beyond broad industry norms and to create stricter parameters for its own watches.
